Several years ago, we were very fortunate to have received a generous grant from the Duxbury Education Foundation to establish an incredible hands-on learning environment in our courtyard at Chandler School. There were many community members and volunteers who brought our pond area to life and helped create the beautiful landscape that surrounds it. Teachers and students enjoy being outside for lessons, reading, drawing, snack time, or simply exploring what the area naturally provides. Fall and spring clean-up days are times when all students can contribute to maintaining and adding to the plantings and learn about taking care of the grounds and the pond. This space allows classes to have hands-on science opportunities and experiences. Future ideas include a vegetable garden and compost area.

In addition to our outdoor courtyard, with the tireless efforts of kindergarten teacher Deb Ventura, Chandler students also enjoy a walking trail through the surrounding woods. Ms. Ventura continues to work with community members, Duxbury staff, and environmental agencies to expand and enhance this trail, making it a valuable learning space for all.
