Today, Duxbury High School Athletic Director, Jeff Maidment, announced that Richard Henninger has been appointed as the new Duxbury High School Boys’ Basketball Coach.  Mr. Henninger is a Chandler School Physical Education teacher who has been the assistant coach for the boys’ basketball team, as well as working with the Duxbury Recreation department running summer basketball camps .  Mr. Henninger has extensive experience with Duxbury basketball and is thrilled to be taking over the program from the legendary Gordon Cushing, who resigned at the end of the 2024 campian. Mr. Henninger played for Duxbury High school before attending Wheaton College where he excelled as an athlete.  Mr. Maidment commented that Mr. Henninger “rose above all candidates as the best person to take the basketball program not only to the next level, but bring back the storied traditions that put Duxbury on the interscholastic map.” When asked about becoming the next head coach for the Dragons, Mr. Henninger commented, “I am beyond excited and grateful for the opportunity to be the Head Varsity Coach of the Duxbury Boys’ Basketball program. To be the coach of a program I grew up playing for, in a town I love, is a dream come true.  I am so fortunate to be brought up in a program that has been characterized by such greatness. To not only get to watch past players and coaches, like Gordon Cushing and Bill Curley, but get to learn from them and benefit from their mentorship, is such a blessing.”  Mr. Henninger went on to thank his mentors Gordon Cushing and Bill Curley for, “helping to prepare me for this moment. I look forward to carrying our program’s strong legacy and bringing up a new generation of basketball players. To the fantastic coaching staff and returning players, I can’t wait to get back on the court with you.

Mr. Maidment wishes to thank the members of the search committee for taking the time to review applications and conduct interviews: Christine Sovik, Kim Ballerene, Brian Keller, Lochlan Kirk-Elliot, Trevor Jones, Brett Barr, and John Rovegno
